About VSA
VSA arts of Iowa, founded in 1977 by Jacqueline Merritt of Dubuque, is devoted to creating a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts. After witnessing the impact of art on her own daughter Amy, Jacqueline saw first hand how in the arts, there is only ability, not disability. The arts offer a means of self-expression, communication, and independence. By learning through the arts, students become lifelong learners, experiencing the joy of discovery and exploration, and the value of each other’s ideas.
Formerly named Very Special Arts Iowa, VSA arts of Iowa changed its name in 1999, eliminating the use of the word “special” to honor the progress made by members of the disability community since the organization’s inception. The letters VSA now reflect the Vision of an inclusive community, Strength in shared resources and Artistic expression that unite us all.
For the past 18 years, the Jacqueline Merritt VSA arts of Dubuque Fundraising committee has hosted a champagne brunch/fashion show raising thousands of dollars to support art programs at Camp Courageous, Hills & Dales, Area Residential Care, Hillcrest Family Services, Goodwill Industries, and Albrecht Acres just to name a few.

With the closing of our fundraiser’s venue for the past many years, we felt the need for change. In 2005, 100 Men Who Cook brought a breath of fresh air to this very worthy cause as well as a host of new attendees. We’ve invited dynamic men in the community to partner with area restaurants and offer a sampling of their favorite recipes to our event attendees.
We are truly committed to creating a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts. We hope you will join us in supporting this very worthy cause.
Sincerely,
